The performance includes Tchaikovsky’s fantasy-overture “Romeo and Juliet,” inspired by the Shakespeare play of the same name, and a lesser known work, Symphony No. 1, from his contemporary, Kalinnikov.

“A composer respected by Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, and who counted Rachmaninoff among his friends, Kalinnikov was only two day short of his 35th birthday when he died from tuberculosis,” says Ruth Lin, director of music at Westmont. “With memorable themes and lush melodies, Kalinnikov masterfully weaves a musical tapestry of life and nature of his time.”
